How we handle your data
1. Who we are
The Nautisch Logboek app helps watersports enthusiasts keep track of their trips, GPS routes, logbook notes and maintenance tasks. We care deeply about privacy, and our mission is to build a user-friendly European alternative to existing sport-tracking apps. Questions about privacy? Email feedback@nautischlogboek.nl.
2. What data we process
Depending on how you use the app, we process the following categories:
| Category | Specific data |
|---|---|
| Account | email address (login name), first and last name, encrypted (hashed) password |
| Vessel data | name, type, make, year of build, dimensions and — if entered — registration number, call sign, ATIS code and MMSI number of your boat, plus a boat photo |
| Location / GPS route | during a recording: latitude and longitude, accuracy, altitude, speed, heading and timestamp — also when the app runs in the background (see §4) |
| Trips & logbook | title, description, dates, harbours, notes, milestones with location, photos and optional measurements (e.g. engine hours, distance travelled, weather) |
| Crew / people aboard | for people you invite: email address, name, role and participation status (see §6) |
| Tasks & to-dos | titles, notes, checklists and dates |
| Technical data | login tokens (stored securely on your device), your device's language setting, and IP address in server logs |
3. Purposes and legal basis
- Providing your account and the core features (login, boats, trips, logbook, tasks) — basis: performance of the user agreement (GDPR art. 6(1)(b)).
- Recording your GPS route and showing it on the map and in your logbook — basis: your consent, which you give per recording by starting a recording (GDPR art. 6(1)(a)); you can stop the recording at any time.
- Storing and showing photos with your boat and logbook notes — performance of the agreement.
- Collaborating with crew (inviting, sharing a trip) — performance of the agreement and our legitimate interest in enabling sailing together (GDPR art. 6(1)(f)).
- Security and debugging (server logs) — legitimate interest in a secure, working service.
4. Location data (GPS) — additional explanation
Recording your sailing route is the core of the app and deserves particular attention, because it involves precise location data.
- Location is only collected while you have started a recording yourself, not otherwise.
- During a recording, collection continues in the background, so your route stays complete while you sail and your screen is off. This is made visible: on Android via a persistent notification, on iOS via the system indicator for background location.
- The route is stored with the relevant trip in your account and is by default only visible to you and the people aboard that trip.
- You can withdraw location access at any time via your device settings; the app can then no longer record a route.
5. Photos
Photos you add (boat photo, photos with logbook notes) are stored with your account. On upload, photos are re-encoded; in the process the EXIF metadata is removed — including any GPS coordinates your camera had written into the file. Only the image content and orientation are kept.
6. Data of crew and people aboard
When you add someone to a trip, we look that person up via the email address provided and store their name, role and participation status with the trip. Only invite people you can reasonably expect to want this, and inform them that their participation is recorded in Nautisch Logboek. Anyone who has been added can decline or have their participation removed.
7. Sharing with third parties (processors)
We do not sell your data. To provide the service we engage a limited number of service providers:
| Party | Purpose | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Azure | storage of uploaded photos (Blob Storage) | Europe region |
| Mapbox | map display and map tiles | US — receives the map area you view and your IP address; transfer outside the EU |
| OpenSeaMap | nautical chart layer (buoys, markers) | receives map-tile requests and your IP address |
8. Privacy by design
We develop our platform in line with the privacy by design principle:
- No analytics, advertising or tracking technology in the app (no third-party analytics, ads or crash SDKs).
- No sale of your data to third parties.
- No training of AI language models on your data.
9. Security and storage
Traffic between the app and our server runs over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Your login tokens are kept on your device in the secure key storage (keychain/keystore). Your data is held by the service providers listed in §7; the exact storage regions are [TO BE VERIFIED].
10. Retention periods
We keep your account, trips, routes, logbook and photos for as long as you have an account.
11. Your rights
You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability (data portability) and objection, and you can withdraw consent you have given. To exercise these rights, contact us at feedback@nautischlogboek.nl.
In the app, under "My account", you can delete your account and all data. You confirm this with a code you receive by email. This deletes all data and we keep no copies of your data.
12. Permissions on your device
- Location (foreground and background) — to record your sailing route (§4).
- Camera and photos — to add a boat or logbook photo.
- Notifications — for the notification during an ongoing recording. The app does not use remote push notifications.
13. Children
The app is not directed at children.
14. Changes
We may update this statement. The date at the top indicates the last change; for significant changes we will notify you.
